If your external hard drive icon is not appearing on your desktop you can easily retrieve via the Finder Preferences. Click on your desktop or the Finder icon in your dock to bring the Finder to the front of your screen. Go to Finder Preferences (Command +,) in the menu bar and select the General tab. There will be a list of items eligible for display on your desktop - hard disks, external disks, CDs/DVDs/iPods, and connected servers.

Select external disks and then close the window. Your external hard drive icon should be back on your desktop.
My WD Passport for Mac won't show up on my desktop anymore. I can feel it whirl to start up and then it stops. I've previously run the disk utility and done repairs and got it to work but now that doesn't even get it to work. I have a white, 2006 Macbook and it is connected by the firewire port. .Macs or you want to use it for Time Machine backups, format it in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). First, connect the external hard drive, bring up Spotlight Search by using the keyboard shortcut Cmd From here, in Format, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), give it a name if you want, and click Erase.
